Our fifth grade students recently had a visit from Mr. Michael Fitzgerald, the chief architect of the Space Elevator and Enterprise Systems. The Space Elevator is a vision of how mankind will import and export goods and materials to and from Earth 30 or 40 years in the future. A tether, or cable, would be placed in space and extend down to Earth, allowing climber cars to move along it up into space, deliver their cargo, and return to Earth. Various gates on the tether are planned for the release of cargo that is intended to reach the moon, Mars, and possibly other planets.

In preparation for the visit, students watched a number of scientific and informational videos, and researched aspects of the topic, such as gravity, materials, and structural feasibility. They were armed with questions and were eager to see the Powerpoint slides and diagrams Mr. Fitzgerald provided. All were amazed that this will most likely become a reality in their lifetime.

Here is the email Mr. Fitzgerald sent to his colleagues after his visit:

QUOTE: I was at Harbor / Park Western Magnet on Monday — for about hour. — last period of the day. The audience was about 40 5th graders. I only showed them pictures ... including V 30 After 15 minutes ... I said “are there any questions?” This scheme was planned — Ms. Miller had planted the idea that they should come with questions. We got questions!! When I asked — every hand shot up — and I was pummeled with Q’s for the next 45 minutes. How - How much - When - Where - robots — people — why — and on. I cannot tell you how amazed I was at the quality of the questions and the excitement in their eyes. They even figured out they would be alive when the first one is built. It was humbling!!!! END QUOTE

Park Western continues to strive to engage students by offering unique opportunities like this one. With a commitment to science, math and technology, students are set on a course that will lead the way to a successful future. What an amazing way to get kids thinking, asking, and learning about planning today and creating tomorrow.

PWP believes in arts education for our students! Our PWP Little Kids Rock bands performed live at the Roxy Theater in Hollywood and on the Breakfast with the Beatles radio program on 95.5 KLOS.

Hundreds of our students have the opportunity to experience playing musical instruments because of the generous support of the Little Kids Rock organization, our dedicated music teacher, Mrs. Corallo, and Mr. Corallo, Ms. Lee, Mrs. Arbolario, and classroom teachers. Mr. Corallo has taken the lead in teaching afternoon music lessons to students and leading the PWP bands.

Arts education and experiences are important to our students. In addition to the ongoing field trips to the J. Paul Getty Museum, our students have been fortunate to experience two special arts performances in December. Most students had the opportunity to attend a live theater performance of Roald Dahl's The BGF performed by The Troupe, a San Pedro youth theater group, here at Park Western Place. Several of our own Park Western Place students stared in the performance! A new book was also given to all students in attendance. Thank you Alison Freedman of The Troupe for making this possible.

All of our third grade students also had the opportunity to attend a performance of The Nutcracker Ballet performed by the San Pedro Ballet Company at the wonderful Warner Grand Theatre here in San Pedro. The performance was magical! We are proud of all of our students who danced in the performance. Our LAUSD Board of Education member Dr. Vladovic helped to make this trip possible by providing transportation for our students. Thank you San Pedro Ballet Company, Warner Grand Theatre, Lora Caudill, and Dr. Vladovic!
